Whilst Jesus wants to give us a new life, the problem is that we all have a past. We have all made mistakes and we all have regrets. We commit a sin whenever we fall short of the Lord’s holy standard. We have all sinned against God.
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
It is when we try to live life our own way that we make mistakes. We cannot conquer the desires of sin on our own. We cannot save ourselves or cleanse ourselves of sin. We cannot earn our way to heaven by being good, going to church, or by visiting religious locations.
The Bible warns us that the penalty for sin is death. To deny our sins and to continue living a life of a sinful nature means we would live a life separate from God in hell for eternity.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Only Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our own sin (Romans 5:8). He was God's perfect sacrifice for our sin (Hebrews 10:4). Three days later, He rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:4) — showing that He had triumphed over sin and death once and for all (I Corinthians 15:57).
No matter how much we may have sinned, there is hope for us all! But it is only when we acknowledge our sin, repent and turn to Jesus to help us live our new life that we can begin to control our desire to sin and resist temptation.
